Software Defined Networking – Cisco ACI – Software Defined Networking – Cisco ACI – SDN, in the context of Cisco’s ACI, is a method of abstracting the network’s control plane, which is how networks learn and understand where connected devices exist, from the underlying data plane, which is how the network actually does the work of sending packets between them. SDN architectures are built upon a physical network of hardware, called the underlay. On top of that is a software defined a set of policy and control plane intelligence in a separate entity called the overlay. Together they form a modern data center architecture that is designed to meet the needs of a demanding data center and its applications, improving performance and operational efficiency, providing better visibility and management and offering a more advanced security model.
